Interesting Tidbits! Lemongrass & Cancer The wonders of lemon grass! Israeli researchers at Ben Gurion University have found that a drink with as little as one gram of lemon grass (the equivalent of a cup of tea) contains enough citral to prompt cancer cells to commit suicide in the test tube (using apoptosis-programmed cell death). During tests using herbs containing citral, the cancerous cells died, and the healthy cells were left happy and unharmed! Citral is the key component that gives the lemony aroma & taste in several herbal plants such as lemon grass (Cymbopogon citratus), melissa (Melissa officinalis) and verbena (Verbena officinalis).
